BSC Pro League Camp (U11-U18): July 22-26, 2013

Be a part of the fastest growing and best youth soccer camp in Colorado! The BSC Pro League Camp is a week long, full-day camp for incoming U11 and older players (Spring U10s and older). The camp will be held at the Broomfield County Commons and take place during the week of July 22 to July 26.

Each day includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, and small-sided games. Drill progressions will be aimed towards recognizing and developing good habits in all aspects of the game: general courtesy, respect for teammates and opponents, and the importance of hard work will be taught to the campers through example by the BSC Pro League coaches.

During the players' lunch break we will have flat screen TVs showing soccer games, greatest goals, and own goals and gaffs. Also throughout the week, we will hold a number of fun activities: penalty kick competitions, cross bar challenge, the new three bounce and score game, and much, much more.

The afternoon sessions will consist of small sided tournaments where players will be encouraged to express themselves and exhibit the skills learned from the morning sessions.

Recognizing that "Goalkeeping is the most unique and important position in the game of soccer", this summer the BSC Pro League Camp is continuing the specialized program for goalkeeper development. Each day players who choose to focus on goalkeeping will be separated into a group that will have position-specific trainers leading development on techniques such as catching, diving, crosses, 1 v 1 and other skills needed at that position. After a full morning of training, goalkeepers will join teams in the afternoon to play games in goal, where they can apply their new skills and grow from the experience. Our coaches will observe, then provide feedback on their positioning, decision making and communications with defenders.

Each registration will include a camp t-shirt, a player evaluation at the end of the camp, and a ticket to the Colorado Rapids vs LA Galaxy game on July 27, along with discounted tickets for friends and family. During the week, the campers will be treated to a special guest visit by a first team Colorado Rapids player on July 26. The first 30 players to register for the camp will participate in the Pre-game High Five Tunnel at the Rapids game.

The BSC Pro League Soccer Camp and coaches will strive for excellence in developing soccer skills and character in all players that participate.

This week long, full-day BSC Pro League Camp (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Mon-Thurs with a 1 hour break for lunch, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Friday) is for all U11-U18 players and costs just $190.

Camp Tips

For parents selecting a full-day camp (which generally become an option around U9 or U10), there are some things to consider. Full-day camps (usually 6+ hrs of daily instruction) are a great learning experience as they deliver a lot of training in a short time.

Players will be working with coaches that have different teaching technique, differing coaching points and different ideas than their regular team coach, which is a good thing. They will mix with players from other teams, other clubs and other age groups which is also useful to their social and playing development.

But these camps can be a bad experience if you don't help your player prepare and recover each day. Here are few things to consider:

Breakfast: Go big! Big bowl of cereal, orange juice, toast, oatmeal. Just make sure it's a lot of calories.
Lunch: In most cases, your player will need to bring lunch. Focus on easy to digest foods with a good mix of carbs and proteins. Peanut butter & banana sandwiches come to mind a top choice. Smoothies and protein shakes are good accompaniments. Avoid anything with caffeine or simple sugars as your player will just crash at some point.
Dinner: Again, good carbs and protein so they can reload for the next day.
Recovery: During camp week, your player will probably be falling asleep at the dinner table. If not, do whatever your normal school night practices might be. Sleep is important not just for the energy levels, but also because camps are a learning experience and to get the benefit you're paying for, players need to be mentally sharp.
Hydration: This is key. It will be hot and it will be dry. Your player will sweat more than s/he realizes and will lose a lot of moisture. Don't worry too much about big bottles of Gatorade, but do invest in an oversize water thermos as the typical 24 oz water bottle won't cut it for a full day on the fields.
Sun protection Part 1: This one is pretty obvious, but worth mentioning. Go for the heavy duty, sweat proof sunscreens. Slather it on before camp each morning and make sure your player can apply it on their own for the afternoon session.
Sun protection Part 2: This one is not so obvious. It is possible to sun burn eyeballs. If they don't already have some, get your player a set of sporty, wrap-around sunglasses with 100% UV filtering. No need to invest in a $100 pair of Oakley sunglasses, but go a little more upscale than sunglass rack at King Soopers. If the camp is doing some sort of heading game or scrimmage, the kids can take them off for that, but otherwise it should be fine to wear them most of the time.
Socks: Pack an extra set of socks for your player each day so they can change out wet for dry at lunch time. Instruct them to take off their socks and boots at lunch time so their feet can dry as well. Look at their feet after camp each day to make sure nothing bad is developing. Kids get blisters too and that will absolutely wreck their camp.
Dry boots & shinguards: Be sure to inspect your player's boots and shin guards each day after camp. Unlace the boots to open them up and place them in a warm area so they can fully dry before the next day. Also, if your player is due for a new pair of boots, make sure they get them ahead of camp and s/he spends time in the yard breaking them in. For obvious reasons, you don't want to send them to camp in a brand new pair that aren't fully broken in.
