Small Fry League

PLAY FAST. PLAY HAPPY. This will be a recurring theme througout the season in all age groups. None as much as with the Small Fry's. This is where it all begins. And unfortunatley, many coaches end their coaching careers at this level. The reasons are simple. This season the club wants to eliminate the most prevalent reason..."I don't know what I'm doing!" Below you will find several tips for game time and practices to make your Small Fry season an enjoyable one.

This age group is so rewarding. Not many adults get the chance to run around and be one of the kids. This is your chance, and that is just what I am encouraging for this age group...JUST PLAY. Small Fry's know no bounds, until an adult tells them what they are. We want our Small Fry's to be creative, run like crazy and have a ton of fun. Your influence as a coach will be enormous on their tiny frames. Thay won't remember wins and losses, only how much fun soccer is. And how much fun their coach is. Enjoy the season.

Player Development - what you should work on during practice

1. Confidence with the ball - Holding the ball, kicking the ball, dribbling the ball, taking the ball, creating and executing moves with the ball.

2. Speed/quickness/creativity - get the kids running everywhere. Quick sprints. Getting back to defend. Moves. Catching the ball before it goes out of touch. Dribbling quickly. Getting drinks quickly. Substituting quickly, etc.

3. Now What? - At this age group this is very common...Ball rolls out of bounds, one small fry will run to it, pick it up, and bring it back to a coach. Teach them what to do during restarts so they can do it quickly on the field. (Coaches sessions will help with this)

Practice tips and drills - below are resources to plan your practices. A suggestion is to find a handful of games and drills that the Small Fry's really responds to and have learned well. That way, if practice is ever taking a turn for the worst, you have a back-up plan at all times while you regroup.

Core Drills and Games for Small Fry's

1. One on One - Keeping the ball away from the other using your body

2. Pirates

3. Clean Slate

4. Dribbling races
